Layering heat transfer vinyl (HTV) may seem daunting at first, but with Siser® EasyWeed® and the right technique, you can produce professional looking results. That’s where the Two-Second-Tack method comes in! It’sperfect for multi-layered designs with minimal shrinkage.
What You’ll Need:
- Siser® EasyWeed® HTV
- Cutting machine
- Weeding Tool
- Baking Paper of Teflon Sheet
- Heat Press or Iron
- Something to put your design onto
Step 1: Prepare Your DesignÂ
Open Leonardoâ„¢ Design Studio or your preferred cutting software. Import or create your design, then resize and adjust it to prepare for cutting each layer individually.
💡Top Tip:
When designing, separate the layers and assign each one a colour that closely matches the HTV you’ll be using. This helps to avoid mixing up colours when cutting.
Step 2: Cut Each Layer
Load the first colour of Siser® EasyWeed® HTV into your cutter, make sure that you mirror your design and cut the first layer. Repeat this process for each additional layer of your project.
Step 3: Weed the Layers
After cutting, use a weeding tool to carefully remove the excess vinyl from the carrier sheet of each layer of HTV.
💡Top Tip:
When importing an SVG file with multiple layers In Leonardoâ„¢ Design Studio, you can add alignment marks to make it easier to keep your layers in the correct positions.
Select your design then: Arrange > Alignment Marks.
These small boxes will cut with every layer. When pressing, put a piece of Heat Proof Tape on your garment where the squares will be. (otherwise they’ll be stuck!) Match up the squares, as you press each layer, then remove the tape with squares at the end.
Step 4: Heat Press Setup
Turn on your heat press, mini press, or iron and set it to the correct temperature for Siser® EasyWeed®: 150°C / 305°F.
Pre-press your fabric or surface for a few seconds to remove any excess moisture and creases. Fabric can hold onto a lot of moisture, even if it appears dry. This is a really important step to ensure strong adhesion.
Step 5: Apply the first layer
Place the first layer of HTV, carrier side up on the fabric. Always start layering from the base layer and work upwards. Position it carefully to ensure there’s enough room for all remaining layers.
Cover the design with baking paper or a Teflon sheet. Using medium pressure, press the first layer for just 2 seconds.
If your design is larger than the heat press plate, shift the press slightly (with overlap) and press each section for 2 seconds. Then, peel off the carrier sheet.
Step 6: Add Remaining Layers
Position the next layer on top of the previous one. Cover again with baking paper or a Teflon sheet and repeat the 2-second press. Remove the carrier sheet after each press. Repeat this step for each layer in your design.
Step 7: Final Layer
Once your final layer is in place, cover the entire design with baking paper or a Teflon sheet and press for a full 10-15 seconds. This final press ensures the full design is properly bonded to the fabric.
